Fesch, Joseph

   prelate
   Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, Joseph Fesch was the maternal uncle of napoléon i. Archdeacon of Ajaccio (1793), he renounced the priesthood and was named commissioner for the French army in Italy. once again a churchman, after Napoléon gained political power, Fesch was named archbishop of lyon (1802), then was made a cardinal (1803). Ambassador to the Holy See, he encouraged the pope, Pius VII, to come to Paris to crown Napoléon I. Although he was showered with honors and named grand almoner of the empire, count, and then senator (1805), he took a stand against Napoléon's treatment of the pope and was sent away in disgrace. In 1814, he retired to Rome. Fesch amassed an important collection of art.
